What is Agarwood
Chapter I

What is 沉香?
The Diamond of Woods

Agarwood, known as Chen Xiang (沉香) in Chinese, is not a species of wood, but the heartwood of the Aquilaria tree that has become infected with a specific mold.

In response, the tree produces a dark, dense, fragrant resin. Over decades, this resin saturates the wood, creating the most expensive raw material in the world—surpassing gold in value.

Types and Grades

Supreme Tier

Kinam (奇楠)

The pinnacle of agarwood. Kinam possesses a unique texture—soft, almost waxy—and a multi-layered scent profile that evolves from cooling to floral to sweet. It is exceptionally rare and often held in museums or private collections.

The Original Path

Sinking Grade

Wood so dense with resin that it sinks in water (Chen Shui). This is the hallmark of high quality.

Regional Terroir

Vietnamese wood is famed for its sweetness, while Indonesian varieties offer earthy, woody, and robust notes. Each region imprints a unique soul upon the resin.

Identifying Quality

The Four Rituals of Appreciation

1. Visual Texture

Genuine agarwood has irregular, natural resin veins. If the color is too uniform or "perfectly black," it may be oil-pressed imitation.

2. Olfactory Evolution

Natural agarwood scent is never overpowering at room temperature. When heated, the scent should be layered—often starting cool and ending with a honey-like sweetness.

3. Water Test

"Chen" means sinking. High resin content makes the wood denser than water. Authentic sinking wood is rare and feels heavy and solid in the hand.

The Care of Eternal Scent

Stable Environment

Avoid extreme humidity or direct sunlight, which can dry out the natural oils or cause mold.

Purity of Touch

When handling beads, ensure hands are free of perfume or strong chemical scents which the wood may absorb.
